Drupal site design

Drupal is an excellent open-source content management system, but it comes with major design challenges attached. That's where we come in.

Many organisations are moving to open-source content management (CMS) platforms to underpin their websites. Drupal is the leading platform: it offers considerable power and flexibility, but it presents substantial user experience challenges.

There are thousands of major Drupal sites live today, yet very few could be considered well-designed. You may be in the same position, and are now charged with making substantial improvements. Alternatively you may be creating a site from scratch and need to ensure that your site delivers a compelling user experience.

Whatever your challenges, we can deliver the site design you need to be successful.

Why bother?

Any site is only as good as its customers believe it to be: no matter how good the system behind it, the typical user only cares about their overall site experience, from its brand personality to its content and functionality. The platform it is built on should be invisible to them.

The benefits of using Drupal as a platform are well known (learn more about it at drupal.org), but here are some of the benefits of an elegantly designed Drupal site:

  1. Powerful site management: The Drupal platform allows for the construction of sophisticated sites that are flexible and easy to manage.
  2. Appealing and engaging: An elegantly themed Drupal site will engage with target users and deliver the full value of the site's offer successfully.
  3. Bespoke CMS: Our management systems are created for the things you want to say and do, Drupal's flexibility allows for this.
  4. Brand guideline and web standards compliance: Custom page templates ensure that new and updated content always conforms to accessibility and HTML standards, always looking how the designer intended.

A compelling experience: Site's that are a pleasure to update and manage get used, ensuring site content is always fresh!

Frequently asked questions

Why do all the Drupal sites I've seen look the same?

Drupal has a steep development leaning curve, so it has largely been the focus of developers, not designers, so far. Drupal ships with a series of standard themes, and these are what you've probably seen. We take a totally different approach, designing bespoke solutions that make best use of the Drupal architecture.

As Drupal is open-source, does this mean it is not secure?

Most of today's leading web apps are built using open-source technologies. Many argue that open source solutions are far more secure than proprietary closed systems as there is a larger base of people finding and fixing potential security issues. There's also generally more goodwill towards open-source software in the hacker community. Drupal has an excellent track record for security.

Why do you recommend Drupal over other open-source CMSs such as Joomla and Wordpress?

Technically, we don't. We're pretty much agnostic to the development platform chosen (we've designed for almost everything over the years) but we support Drupal in-house simply because of its popularity and power as a platform: we've simply not found anything else that is as flexible or robust. Joomla, Wordpress and all the others can be excellent choices for some sites but we have found an increasing number of major organisations choosing Drupal for their site platforms. There's also a massive, active and vibrant community of developers - essential to an effective open-source platform.

Our organisation is using another CMS, how does Drupal compare?

It's impossible to say without knowing the details of the CMS and its implementation. In many cases, Drupal would not be the right solution - no CMS ever will be - but it is extremely flexible and can be configured with hundreds of optional modules to increase the functionality of the core system. We're happy to chat about whether it fits your needs.
